SAYING GOODBYE TO 2017

Well 2017 is on it's way out and boy has it been a crazy busy year in more ways than one. In my personal life I made 3 job changes. Yep, you heard it right, three. I went from 2 part time jobs to 1 full time and then left the full time one for a new one that leaves me sitting behind a desk again. Yeah, I had a lot going on. Besides that I also got my acceptance into an RN program which I will be starting the second week of 2018. So yeah, a lot happened on the personal end this year.

Now let's talk about writing wise......

Um....My output slumped tremendously. Life gets in the way of the best of intentions. I re-released both Dirty Little Secrets and Devious Little Lies as self-published novels after the closing of the previous publisher (which was a whole 'nother' stressor within itself, trust me). My only new release was Madame Moll, Book 3 of the Gun Moll trilogy with super-author Bethany-Kris. Gun Moll was such a fun trilogy to write and I really think Bethany and I really created something unique within the Organized Crime genre. In 2018 Bethany and I are looking to tackle another couple readers have hinted at wanting to read more about, so look for this new standalone sometime in the future.

So what else do I have planned for 2018?

Well... In the personal life, do my damnedest to pass RN school. Yep. Send me all the positive vibes you have available.

And the writing life...for starters I need to get back in touch with my muse and stop being so easily distracted. My attention span has definitely seemed to shrink as I age. But seriously, I have a contemporary, African American romance tentatively titled Crossing Lines that is about 40% done sitting on my laptop. In 2018 I'd like to get past my emotional hang-ups and release this baby into the world. I think Anicca and Treyvon have been sitting on my laptop long enough. Besides Crossing Lines, I'd like to complete Deadly Arrangement, Book 1 of my new Organized Crime Romance series, The Corrupt Cassinellis. Book 1 is about one-third of the way done and has been languishing on my laptop for some time as well.

So...3 books in all. 2 solo and 1 co-authored. Can I do it in the midst of a full time job and attending RN school? I don't know, but I'll try my best to get back to sharing my words with the world again. Happy New Year!

RECAPPED AND READY TO GO

         Hi All,

I'm back. I've been off the grid for a while and we are days into a new year that none of us have any idea what to expect. (I'm looking at you America.) 2016 was a year of extreme highs and extreme lows for me. For starters, in February I dissolved my relationship with an agent that was no longer working for me. It was tough and not something I took lightly. To be quite honest, I was terrified. I worried that I had killed my chances of ever seeing my books in print on a shelf. Then there was the fear of going it on my own. Ultimately I decided to take a leap of faith and go where my heart lead me to go.

2016 also saw the publication of three novels with my name on them. Yes, 3. Cue Extreme High. This was a big deal for me. At the same time I was also confronted with the reality that one of my publishers was closing and I had no idea what in the hell was going to happen to my books with them, including the recently released, Devious Little Lies. Ultimately after many cuts and layoffs the publisher was able to stay open. However, the back and forth did absolutely nothing for my books sales which suffered tremendously. Cue Extreme Low.

But the show must go on and on the positive side of things I dipped my toes into the wonderful world of self-publishing by teaming up with the amazing Bethany-Kris to create the Gun Moll series. Cue Extreme High for two best selling books. Not only is Bethany-Kris, a supremely talented writer, but she is also an acute businesswoman and good friend. I've learned so much from working with her. Again, Cue Extreme High.

I never make resolutions because I never keep them, but I want to do more as far as my writing career is concerned. Here are my tentative plans:

1. Madame Moll-Book 3 of the Gun Moll series will be published and conclude Mac and Melina's journey.

2. Bethany-Kris and I are also planning at least 1 standalone story set in the same world as Mac and Melina, so look out for it.

3. I'm currently working on my first contemporary African American romance, Crossing Lines. I plan to self-publish it sometime this year. Cue big leap for me.

4. I'm currently in the process of revising my #ownvoices fairytale romance to submit to agents and publishers. Let me just say this is not your Disney fairytale. Shit happens.

5. Complete my third and final Demi-God Daughters novel, Goddess by Surrender.

So yeah, let's see if it all comes to fruition between nursing jobs and school. Fingers crossed.

Also if you haven't had a chance to experience the various works I've created, they can all be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Erin-Ashley-Tanner/e/B00FWZN9AG/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1483813565&sr=1-2-ent

TEASER:

Mac Maccari wasn’t a three-piece suit kind of man. He much preferred the comfort of dark-wash jeans, a T-shirt, and combat boots to wear while handling his daily business. It was a comfort thing, and a heat thing.

Glaring up at the bright sun in the sky as he crossed the street as quickly as he could, Mac swore he was melting under his suit. It was an unusually warm Summer for New York. It was almost always muggy during the season, but this year, Mother Nature decided to kick that shit up a notch.

Mac was less than impressed.

It probably didn’t help that the majority of his day was spent running to and from different locations as he handled his crew and what the men were doing at any given time.

But … it was what it was.

And he was damn good at his job.

Mac supposed that if he wasn’t good at being a Capo, he’d already be dead. At least, for the time being, he had that going for him.

The heat wave, however, could go to hell.

Tugging his jacket off, Mac slipped into the business at the very end of the block, tossing the coat over his arm as a cool blast of air from the air conditioner smacked him straight in the face. He soaked in the cold air as he glanced around the place, taking in the woman behind the counter, talking animatedly on the phone and snapping a large wad of gum in her mouth at the same time.

She didn’t even look like she noticed him standing there, for fuck’s sake.

Mac didn’t mind.

He wasn’t here to see her, anyway.

Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Mac searched for the message he’d been left earlier in the day. Infinite Insurance, ask for Ronnie, it read. A few other details had been included, but Mac figured those weren’t important until he found Ronnie.

Mac had come to find out, over his last few months as a newly appointed Capo for the Pivetti crime family that Luca Pivetti had little to no patience for people who owed him something. It didn’t matter what it was—money, action, or a word. If a person owed him, he expected them to pay accordingly.

Maybe even a little more simply because he was kind enough to do business with them.

As the boss, it was Luca’s due.

Mac didn’t question why his boss hadn’t simply sent an enforcer over to the place to handle his shit—that wasn’t his place. He just did what the boss wanted done.

Bypassing the receptionist without so much as a ‘hello’, Mac strolled to the back of the insurance bankers business, finding a hallway with several offices. All had glass windows for walls, letting him see the men and women inside, sitting behind desks with either a phone to their ear, or clients inside the offices.

Thankfully, plaques were attached to each door, names boldly inscribed on each one.

Mac found the Ronnie he was looking for mid-way down the hallway. The heavier-set gentleman was alone inside his office, from what Mac could see through the window, and didn’t seem to be tied up with a phone call as he was busy sorting papers.

That was going to suck when he had to clean up the mess later.

Mac couldn’t find much remorse for what he was about to do.

Business was business after all.

Cosa Nostra business was even tougher.

It simply couldn’t wait.

Mac didn’t bother to knock on the office door, but rather, turned the knob and walked right in, depositing his jacket on one of the two chairs meant for clients.

The insurance banker—Ronnie—glanced up, startled, at Mac’s sudden appearance. If Mac had to guess by the wrinkled dress shirt, the messy hair, and the tired gaze, Ronnie had some shit on his mind.

He was about to get more.

“You can’t just barge in here,” the man started to say. “Clients make appointments.”

Mac reached over and twisted the blinds closed on the window—no one could see in now. He locked the door, ensuring no one would walk in during the … meeting.

Turning back to face the man he’d been sent to see, Mac offered a wide-eyed Ronnie a smile. Cold as it was, Mac figured the guy would take this better if he was a little loosened up before the actual warning came about.

Ronnie started to stand from his desk, confusion writing heavily over his features. “Who in the hell are you?”

“I’m not important,” Mac said, rolling up the cuffs of his dress shirt.

Blood was a bitch to get out.

Maybe he’d avoid the few splatters that might occur, if it were possible.

But probably not.

“But Luca,” Mac continued, shrugging like it didn’t make a difference. “Now the boss and his money is a whole other story.”

For the first time since Mac entered Ronnie’s office, he saw the first trickle of genuine fear light up the man’s eyes.

“I-I have his—”

“They all say that,” Mac interrupted, knowing what the man was going to say.

Bullshit excuses.

Another stall tactic.

“Fact is,” Mac said, keeping an eye on Ronnie in case he grabbed for something to attack with, “… you’re two weeks late, according to the boss. And he was nice enough to fund your little project because apparently, you go way back. Now you’re ducking and dodging Luca like it’s what you do for a living.”

Mac chuckled, waving around at the office.

“Clearly, you work in another business, and you’re not very good at the ducking and dodging game,” Mac finished with another smooth, cold smile.

“Let me call Luca,” the man said quickly. “Please, we’re friends. He’ll understand, I’m sure.”

Mac sighed.

Luca didn’t care who a person was—friend, family, or enemy.

If someone owed him something, they owed him.

“Just let me make this easy,” Mac said. “You’ve only got to bleed, after all. Nobody says you’re going to fucking die from it. Now, if you make it hard on me, that’s going to be a problem, and it’ll probably hurt a lot more. Do us both a favor here, and let me get this over with.”

Ronnie opened his mouth to say something, his gaze darting to the windows, the door, and then to Mac.

Mac knew that look. It was the look of a man trying to find his way out.

Well, he had news for the guy.

“Make a single sound, and I will cut your tongue out,” Mac said quietly. “There is no where to run, and very few people left in the building. So unless you want your associates to know how you’ve been doing underground business with a mafia boss, I suggest you let me do what I came here to do.”
Simple, right?

Mac knew it would be—it always was.

GANGSTER MOLL

Hey everyone,

I have been missing in action from my blog for quite a spell now. Life tends to get in the way. Good news is I'm back and today my co-author Bethany-Kris and I are sharing the blurb for Gangster Moll, Book 2 of the Gun Moll series. Enjoy!

As a newly Made Capo in the Pivetti Crime Family, all eyes are on James “Mac” Maccari, and not for a particularly good reason. The way to his new position in the family was paved with blood, and that left some all too suspicious of where—or who—he might be going after next. Mac isn’t interested in playing to the politics of other Made men or Cosa Nostra. His only goal is to keep his promise and be waiting for his gun moll when she’s finally released from prison.

Until all hell breaks loose … again.

Fresh off her six month sentence, Melina Morgan is all too ready to get back to life, and Mac. The mafia life has been one learning curve after another, but with Mac at her side, there’s nothing that they can throw at her that she can’t handle. Even with a ring on her finger, and a new last name to go with it, Melina won’t be domesticated. But with a man like Mac, he wasn’t exactly looking for that kind of a woman, anyway.

Sometimes, wedding bells bring bloodstains …

When directed attacks start to happen, taking the lives of some of the highest Made men in the Pivetti family, distrust and unrest begins to breed throughout the ranks. Someone is making a move on the boss’s seat, and it seems far too easy to put the blame at Mac’s feet when every single attack is somehow connected to him. All over again, Mac and Melina find they’re fighting an uphill battle to keep each other safe and survive.

But this time, they might not be fighting alone …

GUN MOLL SNEAK PEEK

Today Bethany-Kris and I are excited to share a sneak peek of GUN MOLL. Enjoy.

                                                                CHAPTER ONE

Deep down into the depth of her core, Melina Morgan could feel a blaze burning hotter and hotter. Her soul was on fire. Soon, she knew it would consume her, but there was nothing she could do. Life had already decided her fate and fate was a real bitch.

A droplet of water splattered her face as she readjusted the black umbrella she was holding. The sky was open, pouring water down all around her, but it didn’t matter. Not much did anymore.

She watched with gritted teeth as the simple maple-oak-finished casket was lowered into the waiting plot in the ground. Melina stood alone as the first and only witness to the final resting place of a great man. A great man who’d been all but shunned and forgotten by everyone except her. Hot tears slipped down her cheeks, and as the thunder clapped overhead, she couldn’t hold them in any longer. The despair and anger she’d been holding inside burst from her lungs like a train running at full speed.

Bitterness filled her mouth as she sobbed. Her knuckles cracked as she clutched the umbrella as if it were the only lifeline to hold her up. It wasn’t fair. Those fucks had betrayed him, stripping him of everything he’d worked so hard for; everything he’d honored and held in high esteem, they’d taken it away. Melina shouldn’t have been the only person at this funeral. It should have been filled with friends and colleagues of Daniel Morgan Jr. There should have been a line of men saluting him and placing the symbol of everything Daniel had ever stood for in Melina’s hands.

But Melina held nothing except a worn, black umbrella that did little to keep the rain from chilling her bones. It was just too bad; the rain couldn’t cool the fire in her soul. As the casket came to its final resting place, the gravedigger started to throw the first shovel of dirt in.

“Wait.”

He threw dirt on the top of the casket.

“Damn it, I said wait!” Melina yelled at him.

“It’s raining cats and dogs out here. I’m soaked.”

“Well, so am I. Do you know who you’re burying? Do you know who it is that you’re giving less than a damn about?”

“Look, I’m just doing my job.”

“So did he, and he got no respect for it. No appreciation. But today, you’re going to give me a chance to show him the respect he didn’t get when he was alive. Got it?”

The man glared at her, his muddy brown eyes were hard, but Melina didn’t care. He was going to allow her this moment. Reaching inside her black trench coat, she withdrew a small souvenir. She’d had it since she was a small girl and now she was returning it to the one who’d given it to her. Staring at it with a measure of love and anger, Melina threw the small replica of the American flag down on top of the casket.

“You finished?” the insolent gravedigger asked.

“No, I’m not. You might want to get out of the way for what I’m about to do next.”

“Can you hurry the hell up?”

Melina’s russet brown eyes closed briefly before she opened them again. Reaching once more into her coat, she pulled out a black handgun with a worn grip and aimed it at the gravedigger.

“I suggest you shut the fuck up before you find yourself in a hole out here, too.”

The man raised his hands. “I don’t want any trouble. Please.”

“Then be quiet and let me do what I came here for. You are welcome to continue your miserable excuse for a job, after.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Melina raised her Smith & Wesson 386 towards the sky and fired one round.

“Lance Corporal Daniel Morgan Jr., thank you for your service. Thank you for believing that no man deserves to be left behind. Thank you for taking a stand and sticking by it, no matter what it cost you in the end.”

Melina blasted another round off into the sky. The gravedigger jumped, but she ignored him. She wasn’t finished yet. Her voice wavered as she continued talking.

“When others would’ve simply turned a blind eye, you stuck to your values and you always did the right thing. When life fucked you any way but right, your spirit let you hold on and keep fighting. Few knew your pain, but I saw it, no matter how much you tried to hide it from me. Few will ever know the real cost you paid for serving your country as an honorable man, but I know and I remember.”

With tears streaming down her cheeks, Melina raised the gun and fired one last time.

“This isn’t goodbye. It’s just an ‘I’ll see you later’ and when we meet again, you’ll be the man you once were. The man who looked at life through shining eyes with the hope and belief that no matter what, doing the right thing would always save you in the end. Rest now and know that the pain of this life is over, and you’re in a far better place. See you later.”

As the rain slowed to a light downpour, Melina put her gun away and nodded towards the gravedigger. “He’s all yours now.”

She turned to walk away.

“Ma’am, I don’t mean to pry, but if he was a vet, why didn’t he have a military funeral?”

Wiping her eyes, Melina swallowed the lump in her throat and faced the gravedigger with the familiar coldness already settling in her heart.

“While in Afghanistan, a small group of men under him were trapped behind enemy lines and ordered to be left behind. He disobeyed orders and went back for them; two of those men died. My father lost his right forearm. Instead of giving him a medal for risking his life for his fellow man and for losing a limb, they discharged him dishonorably. He was an example for other men, and nothing more.”

“That was mighty shitty of them to do that.”

“Yes, it was.”

“What about the men he saved? Why aren’t they here?”

“I was unable to get the contact information for the ones who survived.”

Melina turned away and started to walk.

“He was your father, wasn’t he?” the gravedigger called from behind her.

“Yes, he was.”

Taking a deep, cleansing breath, she started to walk through the graveyard and to her car. It was over and she would never return here. Contrary to what many thought, there was no sentimental value to visiting a grave. The person you loved was gone. There was no lingering spirit, waiting around for you to come visit. Only a body remained. A body that had already begun to deteriorate and would soon return to the earth from which it came.

No, Melina was done here. There was no reason to visit a headstone, especially one that did not even begin to convey the true measure of the man buried beneath it.

The rain continued to slacken as Melina walked back to her vehicle. A loud beep made her stop. Opening her purse, she reached inside. Her fingers closed around a black beeper that was outdated and behind the times, but necessary, according to her boss. The number “711” flashed across it. Putting it back inside her purse, Melina kept walking. She’d just received another lesson from life: It doesn’t matter what the fuck is going on, the world keeps moving. Deal with it.

Sad, but true. Anyone else would have the time to grieve properly, to get affairs in order. Hell, just a little time to sift through their father’s belongings and reminisce. But not her.

It was time to dry her tears and close the vault to her heart permanently. She was in this world alone, and she had to make it the best she could. Even if she cringed every time the numbers 711 came across her beeper. Even if her stomach turned, imaging what kind of desperate fool she’d have to entertain tonight. It didn’t matter. She was an escort and tonight, she belonged to the highest bidder, whoever he might be.

GUN MOLL TEASERS

Today my co-author and I are sharing a few teasers from Gun Moll. Enjoy!

Add Gun Moll to your TBR List on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29504632-gun-moll

James “Mac” Maccari’s career in the mafia is at a standstill. As the best solider in his Capo’s crew, all he wants is to be noticed enough to get Made in the Pivetti Crime Family. But instead, his Capo’s interests seem more focused on keeping his solider hidden from the boss, and every other Made man he can. Seemingly stuck right where he is with no chance of going up, Mac doesn’t know what will finally get him the attention he needs to earn his button.

Until she shows up and all eyes are on them …

Melina Morgan survives—that’s just what she does. She’s never been able to depend on anyone but herself to keep her safe and get things done. When a chance encounter puts her in a bad situation with the cops and the mafia, Melina has no choice but to put her faith in the hands of a man that not only infuriates her with his cocky arrogance, but catches her interest, too. Playing pretend in a fake relationship with Mac doesn’t seem all that terrible, until pretend turns real and bullets start to fly.

A man is nothing without his woman …

When the attention on Mac and Melina turns from bad to worse, and someone in the Pivetti Crime Family decides the couple needs to go, they know they’re fighting an uphill battle alone. But making it to the end alive means Mac could get what he’s always wanted, and Melina might find what she didn’t even know she needed.

Together, they’ll make waves the mafia has no choice but to notice …
